At the Crossroads in Sinking Sands

I’m at a crossroads

Between apathy

And melancholy


I stand in sinking sand

And despair when I think I’ve lost the battle

I see the other side of the world

Where people achieve and succeed


They move up in the world

But the sand grabs hold of my feet

And I sink lower again

I know where I want to go


But I don’t know where I am

I know who I want to be

But I don’t know who I am

I’m restless, but I can’t move


I see the other side of the world

Where people go and come as they please

They hold nothing back

And nothing is held back from them


They can see my world also

They look briefly and grin

Knowing they are better

I reach out for help


But they turn away

How can I escape or run?

I try and I work hard to get out

But even after I try


I am baffled by the chains on my limbs

I didn’t know I was trapped

I see the other side of the world

Where they work and they fly


It all seems so nice

While I pay the price

The sand runs between my toes

It reminds me that I can’t go up


That the forces of gravity own this body

I am a slave to the earth

But I lay down on the sand

And I dream peacefully


They lay down in their mansions

And they tremble in the darkness

We live in different worlds


One is better

But it’s not theirs


I know my body is bound

But my soul is free

They spend their lives in luxury


They drain their energy on happiness

In the moment, their minds think its all ok

But when the thrill is gone

They dull the pain with hallucinogens and rum


They walk around freely

But their mind is sinking in the sand

The pain in my soul is stronger

Yet the love in my heart grows fonder


You have seen both worlds

Will you stand beside me on these sinking sands?

Will you guide me through the dark

And hold me when I’m all alone?


Will you come by my side and be like me?

Can you walk in my shoes as I walk in yours?

Can you hold my hopes and dreams and make them yours?

Will you please, be mine?


We can see the other side of the world

How it spins and whirls about

We can see the people’s faces

The fear they hide behind


Can we stand together here,

Just the two of us?


Let's take each other's hands

And stand on these sinking sands


At the crossroads of this world.

     It is a troubling realization when we finally see that our deepest desires aren't always pure and our intentions aren't always the best. It is often too easy to sink in to the ways of the world. Why? Because we live in it and its currents tend to tug at our faith. It is so difficult for me to admit how imperfect I am. I like to think I can do anything, though in reality, I know I am utterly powerless. It's only human nature, I suppose, but it serves me nothing to pretend like I know everything.      All this to say that this spring semester has left me utterly tired and worn out. I have studied and worked my energy out and toward the last couple of weeks before finals, my personal devotions that I've always been so fond of, diminished quickly. I became tired and at times, hopelessly unwilling to spend time in the Word and in prayer. Part of me felt angry toward myself about it, but the other part remained foolishly apathetic. Well, Hello every one! Some days, I get disapointed about my blog, because rarely is it viewed and when it is, I lack the knowledge of it. Other days, I even forget about my blog. So I want to encourage every one that knows me and/or visits this blog, to keep visiting it and to let me know and send a short email or something... it doesn't have to be long! Here is an update from my Aunt Mary from an email she sent: "I want to let you know that I am still working in the “day center” (where we help children that are in danger of becoming “street kids”). Every day is a spiritual war, so I ask for your prayers. This Monday when we were going to take the children to their school, two of the 6-year olds, crossed the street on their own, withouth listening to the instructions given to everybody to cross together. God protected them from a terrible accident. But I felt very weak after that, from the dread I had felt. But thank God I am better now. And we have taken new measures of prev...

A Little Faith

Last week, on Monday, my cousin asked me, "So, what do you want for Christmas?" I gave her an "I don't know" look and said, "Nothing, I guess" so she left me alone. On Tuesday, my brother asked me, "What are you getting mom for Christmas?" And I said, "Nothing, I guess". On Wednesday after I finished bathing my dog, I asked her, "You think I should get anybody anything for Christmas?" and she shook her whole body to dry off, "Yeah, I guess your right" I said. On Thursday I went for a walk and one of my neighbors sitting out on their porch waved at me wishing me a Merry Christmas and said, "Are you going anywhere special for Christmas?" I was surprised by the question, but answered simply, "No. Nowhere special, I guess" and I walked on. Friday, I got a Christmas card in the mail from a good friend that read, "Dear Ruth, I hope you are well. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and hope you...
